Schema markup is code that makes it easier for search engines, crawlers and browsers to understand structured data regarding a site’s content or business , and it makes it easier for search engines to identify the websites of businesses with a physical location.

Google and other search engines use Local Business Schema to enrich their knowledge about a business. When a local search is conducted, this empowers them to know and display the following information:

When the business is open/closed.
A business’s logo (and present it in the knowledge graph card on the right side of the Search results page).
The phone number of a business if someone searches for "{business name} phone number".

So easy to enable on your sites

Enabling Local Business Schema in our client's sites has already been done. Once you've previewed the information to make sure it's accurate, you can validate with Google to see a preview of how it will look.

The following information is required for generating Local Business Schema:

Business name
Address
Geo location (automatically generated).

Images are required for generating rich results ( click the link to check if your website has Google local schema activated ) .

Search engines want to show the world your content, but not if you’ve made mistakes that undermine the user experience and search engines’ guidelines. So give the search engines what they want by avoiding the following common mistakes that content creators make.

1. Short Content

Google likes long-form content because it gives searchers enough information to satisfy their needs. Generally, the more in-depth the content is, the more likely it solves the searcher’s intent or question, and that is what Google wants.

A SerpIQ study found that content shown in Google search results in positions 1-3 had around 2,400 words, on average. In short, long-form content ranked better in Google.

Does this mean you should be writing long for the sake of long? No, but you do want to make sure your content is comprehensive enough to answer searchers’ questions.

A good approach for each piece of content you plan to produce is to determine the main keyword phrase. Then google that phrase to see how long the content is in the top 3 search results. Make sure your own content is longer, more in-depth, more concise, and more well-thought-out. If you do, readers as well as Google will think more highly of your content.

2. No Imagery or Design Elements

No one likes stale websites that look like they were put up in 1999; new, modern-looking websites simply perform better. Content is the same: If you have pages of text with no imagery or design elements, then readers—and therefore Google—will not favor your content over your competitors’.

Design elements that break up text keeps readers on the page longer. The longer they are on the page, the more likely Google will boost the content’s rank due to dwell time .

Basically, the assumption is that the longer they are on the page, the more likely it’s meeting their needs, which means a better chance to be shared on social media, linked to, or be visited again.

3. Misspellings/Content Errors

4. Using Long Paragraphs of Text

Similarly, using long paragraphs is a good way to get your readers to leave immediately from your page. The shorter your paragraphs, the better you can get, and keep, the attention of readers—and keep them reading.

The average reader’s attention span is very short—shorter than even than that of a goldfish, apparently . Hence the importance of recapturing the reader’s attention continuously, throughout an article.

To do that, break up the text. Using subheads, lists, and images to break up the content will keep the readers reading and on the page, which, again, will help with getting the content noticed by search engines.

6. No Outbound Links

Readers want credible content. If your content is merely you doing the “talking” and does not link out to other content (to cite sources, for example), why would the readers find it credible or want to link to you?

Google also recognizes this. A few SEO experiments have discovered that pages with outbound links generally do better in the search process. Is that because content that has outbound links is just generally better, more well-researched content? Absolutely!

Reboot Online did an experiment to see whether outbound links improve ranking in organic search results, and found that they do make an impact. The experiment couldn’t determine how big the impact was, but there was an impact nonetheless.

7. No Promotion

Just because you create content and make it better than everyone else’s does not mean it will go instantly to No. 1. There is a reason SEO takes a while. You have to wait for people to come to your content and give it positive SEO-ranking signals, such as links and social shares.

Those ranking factors could take hours, days, months, or even years. However, if you promote your content, you can get it to the right eyeballs quicker… and so get the ranking signals quicker.

8. No Meta Optimization and CTAs

Another mistake is using the default options for your content’s meta information—titles and descriptions. This may be the last of the SEO mistakes I’ve listed, but it’s important; you can, and should, optimize the content title and description; otherwise, Google will use your header and the first two sentences, by default.

Instead, write unique meta titles and descriptions for each of your content. In WordPress, for example, it’s easy to do by using the Yoast SEO plugin—or others.

You also want to grab people’s attention with calls to action (CTAs) in the meta information. If you can grab the searchers’ attention when they see your content in search results, they are more likely to click on it. And clickthrough rate is one of the largest ranking factors, according to Searchmetrics’ 2015 Ranking factor study .

Does this mean you should be writing long for the sake of long? No, but you do want to make sure your content is comprehensive enough to answer searchers’ questions.

Conclusion

If you look out for these eight common mistakes, and make sure you avoid them, you will be much more successful with organic search traffic to your content. This past November Google announced that it was starting to test indexing their mobile index as the primary index above desktop.

We all know as consumers ourselves that this is the pervasive moment towards mobile isn’t going to stop anytime soon.

People spend 177 minutes per day on their mobile phone. Google themselves admits that this, like hundreds of others that are ongoing, is just a test. They also have said that they expect various elements to change in their importance throughout this evolution.

However for Google, this is a first step towards the future of search engine rankings changes. Are brands prepared and what changes need to be made to ensure that your rankings are preserved or increased?

What we found was that top ranking brands websites are in great shape as it relates to being mobile friendly.

Mobile friendly is basically a website that is either responsive or mobile specific. Put another way, if you are showing your desktop site via mobile browser this is NOT you. In fact, 90% of websites in the top 10 of organic results had a mobile friendliness score of >=99.

The lowest score was just one lonely 93 in the 9 ^th spot which looks really bad given the Y-axis in the below chart. So in general, highly ranking sites do really well in the mobile friendly category. This is great for these brands going forward and great for consumers who expect a mobile specific experience when on a mobile device.

Now let’s shift to mobile page speed. This is one of the ranking factors Google has said they are not yet weighing too heavily into the algorithm, but they expect to increase its weight in the future.

Mobile page speed is important since nearly half of all visitors will leave a mobile site if the pages don’t load within 3 seconds. This is a place where brands need some help.

This data set had no score higher than 63 and all the way down to low 40’s. This is the case with just the top 10 organic rankings. I have seen much worse scores, as low as zero. I am always surprised by these scores, especially with mobile friendliness scores so high.

So what is the take away from this? I think it’s 2 things: 1) We are in the early stages of mobile adoption so we as an industry are trying to define the best practices. 2) There is opportunity to gain some ground in the battle for organic ranking supremacy. As the algorithm evolves there will be a chance to beat these brands at the mobile arms race.

I recommend 3 things;

The mobile world is an important one and having the right customer experience and strong search rankings is a moving target, but one that with careful monitoring you can be effective.

Creative thinking is a skill, not a talent. With a few simple techniques, just about everyone can come up with creative ideas. And, as with all skills, the more you practice… the better you get.

1. Deep-dive, then back off

Set aside a defined stretch of time to soak up as much context and details as you can about your topic or challenge. Also: clarify in your head what you want to achieve; review the main challenges or issues; and seek out perspectives from other people.

But don’t try to solve anything yet. Just focus on absorbing the information.

Then stop thinking about it.

You’ve prepared the ground and planted the seeds, now you need to give them time to germinate.

2. Prepare your mind

Now you need to get into the right mindset to be open and receptive to new ideas. Your subconscious mind can do amazing things, but it needs free time and space in which to operate.

Think about your last really good idea. Did you have it while sitting at your desk working? I bet the answer is “no.” Chances are, you were staring out the window on a train. Or in the shower. Or on a walk.

There is no linear “effort in/results out” relationship with creative thinking. Trying harder does not usually accelerate the outcome. In fact, the opposite might be true.

So relax, get into nature , do some exercise, and get plenty of sleep. Read some interesting or inspiring articles. Do things that you enjoy.

All of that recharges your energy and opens your mind to possibilities.

A bit of boredom is helpful, so switch off your phone and give your mind time to wander. Sure, it sounds unproductive. But behind the scenes your subconscious mind is busy connecting the dots, exploring patterns, and generating possibilities.

3. Capture the moment

At some point, you’ll find that ideas are spontaneously popping into your head. Capture those sparks of inspiration immediately! Jot them down, together with any associations or context.

Some people carry around a notebook for that purpose. Others use an app on their phone. The method doesn’t matter; just don’t lose those moments of inspiration!

As ideas pop up and you jot them down, you’ll often find that the simple act of doing so leads to even more ideas.

4. Provoke ideas with lateral-thinking techniques

You can also explore more structured methods of sparking new ideas. For example, by using the “ lateral thinking ” techniques of Dr Edward De Bono.

Traditionally, people rely on critical thinking, logic, and rationality to get to the “right” conclusion. But creative thinking is different. Our mind is a self-organizing system built upon associations among concepts. So a crazy idea can lead to another idea, and another, and another, until we arrive at a practical solution.

The following are among lateral-thinking techniques:

5. Direct your attention with frameworks

The logically inclined among us might try using structured frameworks to direct attention and spark ideas. Those frameworks can be your own creation, or someone else’s. There’s no “right” framework: its value lies simply in helping you generate more ideas.

A couple of frameworks I’ve found useful for idea generation:

6. Multiply your ideas with concept-mapping

Once you have ideas, concept-mapping can help you generate more of them. Take a specific idea and try to identify the overarching or more abstract “parent” concept; then ask yourself what other ideas fit within that concept. A mind-map can be useful to depict this process visually and make it easier to apply the technique at several levels.

For example, let’s say you want to improve sales and you have a specific idea of a back-to-school student discount. That fits within the higher-level concept of “targeting students with relevant, time-limited offers.” Once you recognize that, you can brainstorm a host of specific ideas by considering other key moments in a student’s life. You can also repeat this process at different conceptual levels, say by broadening the concept again to “targeting different customer segments with relevant, time-limited offers.” This leads to mapping out many different segments (e.g., small businesses, first-time buyers, pensioners, frequent users), and then brainstorming offers for each segment. Before you know it, you’ll have dozens of campaign ideas to consider.

Everyone can be creative, because creative thinking is a skill—not a talent. That’s great news: Even if you’ve never thought of yourself as particularly creative, you can get better at it over time.

So get out there and start applying the techniques outlined in this article. With a bit of practice, you’ll soon be generating lots more creative ideas.
